  • May 09 - Swine Influenza: Human cases of a new form of influenza virus have been identified in the United States, Mexico, Canada and Scotland. The virus is a type of influenza A virus that is usually seen in pigs ('Swine Influenza'), http://www.health.vic.gov.au/ideas/diseases/swine-influenza.

  • March 09 - New National Nurses Award 2010 - The Australian Industrial Relations Commission has released the new occupational national Nurses Award 2010 to commence in January 2010 under it's award modernisation scheme. From that date, all nurses except primary and secondary school nurses will be covered under a single national award.  The new award will see nurses in general practice and nurses working in the hospital system under the same award for the first time. Possible implications for practice nurses include provisions for leave as well as weekend and holiday loadings. The award also has implications for the development of a formal career path for practice nurses in it's classification definitions and progress through 'pay points'.The Nurses Award 2010 can be viewed and downloaded at http://www.airc.gov.au/awardmod/awards/nurses.pdf
  • eHealth Incentive - The incentive aims to encourage use of electronic health systems in PIP practices. The e-Health Incentive would be incorporated into the PIP payments with a payment level of $6.50 per Standardised Whole Patient Equivalent (SWPE). Payments will be capped at $12,500 per practice per quarter, up to a maximum of $50,000 per year.
  • Feb 09- The number of notified cases of pertussis has increased sharply in Victoria, with a 48% increase occuring between Dec 07 and Dec 08. This has prompted the Chief Health Officer of Victoria to issue the following alert, click here
  • Family Violence Protection Act has recently been created to replace the 21 year old Family Violence Act, click here
  • Jan 09 - Maternity Immunisation Allowance (MIA) is currently a non-income tested one-off payment of $243.30 to encourage parents to immunise their children. It is available for children who are immunised between 18-24 months of age and is indexed in March and September each year. On 1st January 2009 changes to MIA will come into effect, these changes will affect the way MIA is paid and extend eligibility for overseas adopted children.
